Should you book a hotel directly or use an online travel agency (OTA)? There is no universal winner. The right route depends on the total price, hotel-loyalty benefits, card rewards, flexibility and how much support you may need if plans change.
Compare the final price, not the first price
Put both options in the same currency and include taxes, resort charges, service fees, payment fees and breakfast. Check whether the room type, bed, occupancy and cancellation deadline are identical. A lower headline price is not a saving if it excludes something you need.
Value hotel status realistically
Direct bookings may be required for hotel points, elite-night credit or status benefits, depending on the programme. OTA bookings may not qualify. Read the programme's current rules and value only benefits you expect to use. A possible upgrade should not be treated like guaranteed cash.
Check the payment merchant and card category
A direct hotel charge and an OTA charge may be classified differently by the card network. That can affect bonus categories, foreign-currency fees and promotional eligibility. The merchant shown at checkout also determines who handles payment disputes and refunds.
Review flexibility line by line
Compare cancellation deadlines in the hotel's local time, prepayment conditions, amendment rules and no-show charges. With an OTA, changes may need to pass through the platform. With a direct booking, the hotel may control the reservation. Neither route is automatically more flexible; the booked rate's terms matter.
Consider disruption support
If the property cannot honour the booking, ask who is responsible for reaccommodation. Save the confirmation, room description and payment receipt. For complex trips, the value of clear support can outweigh a small price difference.
A quick decision framework
- Choose the option with the better all-in value for the same room.
- Book direct when confirmed loyalty credit and status benefits outweigh the difference.
- Use an OTA when its price, inventory, package or cancellation terms are meaningfully better.
- Recheck card rewards and fees for the actual merchant of record.
- Keep evidence of the terms shown when you pay.
Where HeyMax fits
HeyMax can help you compare eligible travel merchants, choose a suitable card and find supported ways to earn Max Miles. It does not override hotel, OTA or card-issuer terms, so verify the final booking conditions before paying.

Bottom line
Direct versus OTA is a trade-off, not a rule. Compare like for like, assign a realistic value to status benefits, check the card category and choose the route whose price and terms best fit this trip.
