1. Find the award first

Search the airline or loyalty programme you intend to book through. Confirm the flight, cabin, number of passengers, mileage price and taxes. If you are looking at a partner-airline seat, verify that the programme receiving your miles can actually see it.

2. Check the transfer mechanics

• Minimum transfer amount and increment
• Conversion ratio and any fee
• Typical and maximum processing time
• Name-matching requirements
• Whether the transfer can be cancelled
• Points and miles expiry rules

Use current official terms. A blog post, forum report or previous transfer can help set expectations, but it does not guarantee today's result.

3. Watch the effective date of changes

Programme updates can alter the economics of a transfer. 6. Record the transaction

Save the transfer confirmation, terms, reference number and account balances before and after. If miles do not arrive within the stated period, contact the card provider and loyalty programme with the same evidence.
